On Wednesday, 12 November, Sandor and Ben attended the Safety & Security Escape Trucks event in Terneuzen. Along with forty other members of the PCS7 user club, they spent the day immersed in the world of safety, cyber security, and OT security. Read their report of this special day here!

Rather than theoretical sessions, the day involved interactive activities set in three spectacular Escape Room Trucks.

SCALDA

The day started at SCALDA, a vocational school. We were given a tour of the facilities and a lecture by Frank Leenhouts, a teacher of maintenance and process technology. This took place in an impressive practical classroom containing various process installations where pupils can train.

Distributed Control Systems

Three DCS systems are used here, including PCS7. There is also an in-house brewery with steam boiler facilities, a sludge treatment plant, and various test setups for implementing different control systems, such as split range.

Safety

We were then divided into teams. The emphasis was on working together and staying focused to complete the challenges. These challenges were based on realistic scenarios, such as dismantling a bomb in the Safety Escape Room truck. There, small mistakes had major consequences. It was confronting and instructive to see how quickly you can overlook something!

Cybersecurity

In the Cyber Security Escape Room, we had to crack codes, spot suspicious activity and prevent a hack. The time pressure made it exciting, and it became clear just how important it is to stay alert in an increasingly digital working environment. The other Escape Room Truck and Siemens Truck were located elsewhere.

OT Security

The OT (operational technology) Security Escape Room provided the most surprising insights. Protecting industrial processes poses a very different challenge to traditional IT security. Ransomware that shuts down a production line sounds abstract until you find yourself in the middle of it and have to come up with a solution in fifty minutes!

Relevant applications

On the Siemens Digital Industry bus, we gained valuable insights into new technologies and applications relevant to our field of work. The day focused on raising awareness: we had to provide personal details in advance regarding our own risk of participation, but it turned out to be a scam, and we all fell for it!

It was an educational, confrontational and original themed day. Thanks to the PCS User Club for organising it!
